America is at its worst in decades. Where do we go to regain our decency?
Talk-show host and comedian Stephanie Miller broadcasts on Free Speech TV as well as on the Progress Channel on SiriusXM radio. I encourage everyone to subscribe. She is the daughter of Bill Miller, who was Barry Goldwater's running mate in 1964, and a former Nuremberg prosecutor. She asked the rhetorical question on a recent morning broadcast.
The dismantling of America has been rapid and strategic, and it has taken barely four months. Anybody who denies that is either blind or intentionally ignorant. Donald J. Trump is the worst president in our history. We have suffered some corrupt leaders in our 250 years, but Felon 47 is undoubtedly the worst! Refusing to acknowledge the murder of two Minnesota legislators at the hands of a MAGA terrorist was the lowest of the low. Really, Donny…do you even know what decency is?
I am sorry, but Trump is ignorant of how government works. He does not know history, and he is proud to surround himself with cruel sycophants. The brazen recklessness of his second term is decidedly more destructive than his first time around. The cruelty of his rhetoric is reprehensible—and not a word from Republican congressional leaders. In fact, there is no Republican Party left—it's all MAGA!
Indeed, the complacency of the Republicans in Congress is maddening. Someone has observed that at least in the 1974 Richard Nixon scandal, the system worked. It is this frustration that has prompted Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina to announce his plans to retire in the face of Trump’s threats to “primary” him.
Reflecting on such things, Stephanie asked, “Where do we go to regain our decency?”

As of today, the 2026 mid-term elections are 70 weeks out, and that seems to be our best hope. The Senate has passed Trump’s budget bill, complete with all the lies that served to cover up its ugliness. There are no provisions to remove income tax on Social Security benefits and no suspension of taxes on overtime pay. No Medicaid cuts? Yes, there are—big ones! Trump and the GOP clearly lied about all of this!
Irresponsible ICE raids continue, and now we have a detention facility in the Florida Everglades, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” Trump and his ignorant cheerleaders on Fox News had a filed day laughing about that one, as did Trump himself. Disgusting!
In the face of all this, it’s hard to remain hopeful. I am sad to say that this is who we have become—even if it’s not who we claim to be. The explicit cruelty and the delight taken in it is monstrous.
The Supreme Court appears to be in lock-step with the mindset of Felon 47—I am still incredulous that we allowed such a one to become president in the first place—and let us absorb the painful lesson of our collective failure to opt for the alternative that was plainly before us. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves, and there is no one coming to save us— but us. Can we reclaim our decency? Over time, I hope so.
And when this nightmare is finally over, we simply must hold accountable those who would have destroyed us—not simply to “get even”—but so that this threat never again raises its ugly head.
Eloquent and profoundly true
